My Journey From ₦20K Gigs: Lessons, Growth & Success
I studied Biochemistry at the university. But, as many Nigerians know, a degree doesn’t always guarantee a dream job. My options? Take a low-paying job I didn’t love or switch careers entirely. I chose the second path.
I was determined to make it in digital marketing. Within six months, I was already running marketing for a business portfolio. But there was a problem—I wasn’t earning enough. I quickly realised I needed better skills to earn better money.
2019, I got my first side gig and was paid ₦20,000. It felt good, but I wanted more. Over time, I kept learning, improving, and taking on bigger projects. Eventually, I started making over ₦500,000 per month using my digital marketing and design skills.
The Birth of My Website & My SEO Journey
In 2020, I built my website, walemarketer.com. Not for business, but as a way to learn web design. That experiment turned into a real skill. Since then, I’ve built 10+ websites and over 50 landing pages.
I also tried paid ads on Google and Facebook in 2019 and 2020. The results? Not great. I knew there had to be a better way. That’s when I discovered SEO.
I first heard about SEO in 2019 while working at a web design company in Lagos as a Junior Marketing Manager. My boss was obsessed with SEO. He had worked for a big e-commerce company that got tons of free traffic from Google. He wanted me to outsource SEO and learn from experts.
As I worked with those SEO experts, I realised they weren’t doing anything I hadn’t read about before. The only difference? They had real experience, and I didn’t.
Going All In on SEO
By late 2021, I was struggling to get clients. So, I made a big decision. I was going to master SEO and use it to grow my business.
I spent months studying top agencies and SEO experts. I analysed their websites, learned their strategies, and reverse-engineered their success. I also wrote over 100 articles answering business owners’ biggest marketing questions.
Then, in mid-2022, it finally happened, I got my first SEO client. Since late 2022, SEO has been my only source of clients, both in Nigeria and internationally. At my peak, my website pulled in 17,000 clicks in just 28 days!
